Have you been the victim of an early morning jolt? Is your bedroom or living room affected by electricity running through your carpets? Many assume they are just dragging their feet and that is what is causing the zapping. However, as that is indeed part of the problem, it is not the only issue. Some rooms and carpets just create static charges that you will later become the victim of. There are several reasons why some carpets seem to give you that jolt more so than others. What Causes Static Electricity on Carpets?
Let’s begin with why this phenomenon even occurs. The carpet itself could be to blame. Some carpets, especially those made of nylon, seem to hold more static than other carpets like wool, or polyester. If your carpets are old and the padding underneath is in poor condition, this could also be to blame. The floor will naturally create electrical currents. As the electricity builds it will follow into your carpet as you walk on them. In turn, this will generate enough electricity to create a zap or shock. Where this is a natural problem, there is more to it than that. When a room becomes dry or has really low humidity or moisture, this will also make it easier to generate static. In ideal conditions, the moisture in the air accumulates on the surface of the carpets and will act as a protective barrier between you and the static. Without that barrier, you will have more static than normal.
How to Get Rid of Static Electricity on Your Carpets
So now we know what’s causing the static, what can be done to reduce its effect or better yet, remove it altogether? The answer to your entire problem is adding a protective barrier. There are a number of ways you can add moisture or a protective layer to your carpets. Let’s first discuss commercial products. There are commercial anti-static sprays that will apply this protective barrier. However as great and simple as it may be, some don’t like to use it for two reasons. One being that the effects of the sprays don’t last long. You will need to reapply the spray often. Next is that it can leave a sticky coat on top of the carpet. As a result, you will need to have your carpets cleaned more often than usual. There is an alternative. You can make your own anti-static spray and without leaving a sticky layer on your carpets. It’s so simple. Using a spray bottle, pour 8oz. of water than add one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol with another tablespoon of fabric softener. This will reduce the static and leave the room smelling great. By doing this you will be adding your own protective barrier to your carpets. Of course if the weather permits, there is another simple solution. Just open the window. Having the air from outside circulate in the affected room will bring in the moisture that will later set on the carpet’s surface. Another final solution is also using a humidifier. Nothing makes a room fill with moisture better than a humidifier.
